  1. Hi George,
I appreciate the poster as well and think it represents the very best of what education can be for kids. I would also add that while we are increasing student ownership we need to fully recognize our responsibility to scaffold, empower, protect, include, push, encourage, love, teach, listen, and so much more. Student ownership that’s coupled with teacher ownership is a truly beautiful thing. One without the other leads to unmet potential.

Honestly it doesn’t blip my radar until I’ve seen the teacher introduce these rules, model them, illustrate to the students when they are themselves performing the rules correctly, and maintain a classroom environment and expectations that guarantees these rules are brought up, valued, and behaved daily. Amazing, inspired teaching of they accomplish this. I’m wary at the times, and it’s not to say that THIS is one of those times, when our inspiration and expectations does not become habit of mind and behavior because we do not instill the discipline and fastidiousness needed.

Great post George – thank you!
I was talking to a student on his way to art class, and I said, “Have fun and be creative.” He replied, “We have to be creative or we get in trouble!” I thought that was a nice departure from, “We have to bring our pencil or we get in trouble.”

The post is a testament to the enduring spirit of changing education for the better. It’s grit….growth mindset. …. student ownership of learning. I also like Brad ‘s comment. Powerful and inspiring.
