    I’m a big believer in that old tech interface term: WYSIWYG. ‘What you see is what you get.’ As teacher librarian in a large M.S. I saw tech being used as a tool and not effectively. ‘Acitivities’ were planned with no learning goals. The .ppt projects with one engaged learner, maybe 2…is a non-learning scene I was too familiar with in terms of process and product….

    The research ‘projects’ I saw were ‘cut and paste’ of info and no evidence of learning. Kids could not talk about their work…they had to go back and read “their” ‘Report’. The lack and squandering of learning opportunities was All You Saw and All There Was/IS. Text features, author’s message, main idea, perspective, learner’s POV, facts: pros and cons, sourcing of info, None of this thinking was seen and the students were not engaged learners. So sadly I agree that WYSIATI is a fact that we as educators must face head on.

    The toxicity of the teachers who say “I don’t have enough time” when it comes to inviting collaboration, and embracing new learning is overwhelming. In my T/L role, I could not create a culture of inquiry based learning school wide. The leadership was not there from site based management. The system support was there but was not embraced or promoted by the new administration at our school level. Prior PD and mission were abandoned in favor of ‘Tech’: First Steps, Inquiry, Curriculum Mapping were the first to go. Who said “ignorance is bliss”?

    I ignored the rocks (the WYSWIGS the WYSIATI) those that could not look beyond, the naysayers, the comfort zone teachers. I knew no amount of water could make them grow. And I worked with the teachers I could. We ploughed the fields together, planted our seeds, nurtured them, helped them grow, fed them, and reaped our harvest together. It was rewarding work but a struggle. Since then I found a new home as Elementary T/L where in our school we all share a common vision, mission, and belief in learner success.

    If you visit our school you will see and hear authentic 21st C learning and you will feel a welcoming school where everyone is valued and recognized as a learner and where shared beliefs, knowledge, goals, and expertise live and breathe.

    Great article George – it’s interesting to reflect how often students complain about having to learn something new related to technology in comparison to how frequently some adults do!
