I am so sorry George. I recently had a very big scare with my big baby girl (an english mastiff) and feared it was time to say goodbye to her. I have owned dogs all of my life and said goodbye to more than I care to remember. It never gets easier, you love them, you go with them as they take their final journey, and then you mourn them like you do any other friend or family member. You are in my thoughts.

My thoughts are with you tonight George. Having taken several of these final trips to the vet, it never gets easier. Shaq was lucky to have a good life with you and Kobe. I hope a McDonald’s breakfast for two is part of the plan. I’m not sure what else I can say, but if people loved each other 1/2 as much as dogs love us…what a wonderful world this would be.

I’m sorry, George. I’m grateful you have had each other. You are in my thoughts.

When a companion is so well loved, then “goodbye” is unimaginable. I know she’s been a blessing. It’s important to cherish vital things for every day is a gift. Shaq is your “teacher” and now she is mine, along with many others. Thank you for sharing tonight, peace.

Lost my 15 year old last year. One of the hardest days of my life. My heart goes out to you.

I am so sorry. I had to put my little buddy Booth to sleep last year because he was in so much pain. I stayed with him in the room as he took his last breath, tears running down my cheeks onto him. He was my buddy for 17 years and there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t miss him. I’m there there with you George. Take care.

So sorry for your loss. I had my dog for 17years before I had to let him go. She will be in peace after having this final evening of bonding with you.

Sorry for your loss. My eyes are filled with tears because of your love for her. You are in my thoughts.

  9. Hey Pal,

If Shaq taught you to be the unconditionally giving guy that you are, then we all owe her one. Give her a kiss from all of us.

    Sending love your way,
    Bill

“We can learn so much from our dogs if you are open to the love that they are willing to give, and even if sometimes you are not.”

Never a truer word spoken. My thoughts are with you and your courage to sit with the pain of the last few moments of a life. So touched you chose to share this here. Helps me value each day with my little one – who got me not to take him to day care today as he was sleeping too comfy on the sofa after a big fox chase.

The bittersweet nature of impermanence. We do not know each other, and yet it felt important to make contact.

My eyes are filled with tears as I read this lovely tribute to Shaq! I wish that I could say something that would give you some comfort, but as someone that’s had to make a similar decision recently, I know that there are few words that make things better. Do know that you have lots of friends out there that can be listening ears and support systems during this hard time. Thinking about you, George …

It’s very touching..my eyes were full of water. I know that what you mean about unconditional love. We’ve got a puppy she is on!y 4months old and we cannot imagine ourselves without love. These little creatures bring and teach us about love. I am so sorry for the loss of your sweet girl. If dogs have soul she will be certainly watching you. xx

So sorry to hear this, George. We foster dogs, usually 2-3
weeks, max. Last November we took in a bald guy, who needed lots of love. Six
months later, having gone through socialization issues, health issues, and the
discovery of malformed disc causing arthritic symptoms in his vertebrate, he
got adopted. My usually “tough guy” 22 year old son went with to take
him. They were so close . . . ,he trained him to do all kinds of tricks. We
cried on the way home, and that night he said that he was watching American Dad (least of all shows you think you’d hear this from), and one of the comments on the show was “Don’t grumble and be sad because it’s over; SMILE because it happened!” Easy to say, and impossible to do, but when the sadness was overwhelming, it did help to focus on that thought. So happy to hear how much joy she brought you. Those
memories will always bring joy, too!

Sad to say goodbye. Pets are family, huh? Especially those ones that are their own little people who are fiercely loyal, but insist on doing things their way anyway. Sorry to hear it, George.

  15. All of us who make up the dog people of this world hear your pain. A sad funny story when our pointer, Nell passed my father cried. It was something that he never did when his own father had died a couple of years earlier. Dogs they do have an impact on us eh?

What a beautiful tribute to your dear friend. From one dog lover to another my heart literally breaks for your loss. She was a lucky girl to have you!

  17. Mary Heenan

Like others have said, your beautiful tribute to Shaq brought tears to my eyes. What a loving tribute! I can only hope I am as brave and as eloquent when my girl’s time comes.
