Leaders Should Be Learners (Video)

Howard Rheingold had recently interviewed me for DML Central on some of the work that we are doing in Parkland School Division.  I thought that I would also share  the video of our conversation:

George Couros: Connected Principals Should Be ‘Learner Leaders’ from DML Research Hub on Vimeo.

“When you block stuff, you don’t talk about it.” George, you are so right. My district is setting students up to engage in risky, online behavior after school because we allow our fear to overrule common sense. I like how your district provides students with learning experiences that allow students to engage in social media safely and responsibly. We are required to teach Internet Safety, but currently, 99% of the internet is blocked, and therefore it’s all theory. Of course our students can list the Do’s and Don’ts of using the internet, but are they applying any of it outside of school? Not according to any of the parents I’ve talked to.

How can I, as one teacher in a district of thousands, help my district overcome this culture of fear? (Besides sending them a link to your interview and #cpchat?)
