So today, Malyn Mawby made this amazing sketch video for the opening of my K-12 Online Conference that I will be creating this week. I loved it so much, that I thought this would also be a great thing to do for the credits. Discussing this idea, it was thrown out that maybe I could challenge my Personal Learning Network to do their own video similar to this with the idea of “Playing in Public” and show the process of a sketch. This would be a great way to see what that term looks like to different artists, and also show off some of the amazing things that I see educators and kids do all of the time.
To be honest, I am not very artistic so I don’t know what it could look like, but I would love some videos similar to Malyn’s to end my video. The whole idea of “playing in public” would be exemplified through this process. I would need the art in a “video” form and put into a dropbox file. If you are not an artist, but know someone who is and would like to do something like this, please share this post. I am open to anyone who wants to share their video, but I obviously will have to edit it somewhat to make sure it fits into the video.
The other thing, I would need these by this Friday (November 16) evening if you were interested (I would finish on the weekend).
This may be a stretch, but it never hurts to ask

Hey George,
That is a really neat video – cool stuff. I'm going to push back a little bit on the idea of play being presented here – and I know that I will ruffle feathers, but take as deeply as you like. That is the point of a PLN, right?
I worry that by calling for an artistic "thing", part of the most exciting aspect of play is missed. Play, to me, is not reserved for those who have a talent or skill already established. Play is about the emergence of something new. What is the difference between "show and tell" and "play"?
I would say that even if you aren't an artist, you could participate in something like this by sharing a video of you playing around with something. Don't just pass it along to artists you know. If we did that as teachers, we would never grow. Just my thoughts – I'm ready to hear the other side – what did I miss?

Fair enough. Maybe the idea is not that you are an “artist” but I think you should be at least have some interest in the activity. Would it be play if I hated the activity? I totally get what you are saying though. What if I have no interest in the subject/activity? Is there room for play?Thanks for your thoughts

Your question about lack of interest is really interesting and I hadn't given it much thought. In order for something to be playful it has to be engaging, right? Now I am pondering the implication for what we do in the classroom – hmmm….

That's as deep as I went and really just took 20 minutes to play also, by making the video and playing with i-movie, as I'm not very skilled at i-movie.
I didn't know I had to think so much, deconstruct the word play, or philosophize. I just thought you wanted people to play and share.

My initial comments were not directed to you, but to George, who I know is open to push-back. I want to be clear that if I was questioning your project, I would have replied to you directly.
I do deconstruct and play with language – that is how I grow and learn.
Comments forums are meant to be places where people ask questions when they don't understand or agree with a post. I hope that you can be open to hearing questioning and dissenting voices without taking them personally.

Thanks for thinking it's a neat video.
The video really is only half the story. Here's the rest of the story – where I explain my concept of play as well as the process I went through to get to create the video itself. The sketch is merely an expression of what I think play is.
p.s. I did suggest to George to be more explicit about the 'other half of the story'. Then again, if he was, perhaps you wouldn't ask the question you just did – a very good one at that.

Thanks for sharing the process – I really get what you were doing with the sketch – the process of creating the video was itself very playful. It is also a great narrative of the creative process, which, again, tends to be quite playful.
Yes, I admit it, I do deconstruct and pull apart and question – by exposing my initial reaction and asking for feedback I grow and learn. Thank you so much for honouring that with your response because it provides me with the opportunity to see things differently and adjust my perspective.

I certainly can not claim to be a talented sketcher, nor even a great photographer. I think George is right in emphasizing that the play is the thing. And perhaps, if we aren't having fun, we aren't playing. Play can be neither contrived nor designed. We can design opportunities and tools for play, which George has done here.
Anyway, I tried, regardless of my talent, and I enjoyed doing it. The product is questionable, but the process was there. Sometimes we need to assess the process and metacognition, rather than the product.
Anyway, George, I took up the challenge. I hope you enjoy the video.

I have a few middle school students who are showing an interest in this project. Clarify for me, please? Must the sketch be about something you would "Play in Public"? Or is the "play" actually the process of creating something, and the subject of the final sketch can be anything?

It can be showing anything that identifies "play". I do not want to define it too much because I definitely do not want to kill any creativity
