What we can learn from Lady Gaga…

The title is serious.

Watching the epic rise of Lady Gaga into pop culture has been absolutely fascinating.  Yes there are things that she has done that are questionable and would be considered inappropriate by many and there is definitely some shock value in her performances.

Although she is extremely talented and her songs are extremely catchy, you see that from many musicians.  This is not what separates her from the rest.

What really separates her from others is the way that she reaches out to her fans, connects, and empowers them.  Check out her tweet from today:

Now that may seem superficial, but if you check out her Twitter stream, you will see that she constantly connects and reaches out to her fans.  She’s using social media in a way that didn’t exist when I was a kid.  I couldn’t even imagine what it would have been like to have some of my favourite bands (Wham anybody?) reach out to me when I was young.

When you reach out, empower, and believe in those that you connect with, imagine the power that you give them.  Social media is making it easier (and even possible) to do that.

I remember distinctly when I felt one of my own teachers believed in me; it changed everything.

We can learn a lot from that approach.

I agree too. Reaching out to kids, meeting them wherever they are at, creates an opportunity to connect with them and make them feel special (which they are, of course, but sometimes they don't know that :) ). Everybody likes to be acknowledged. She's one smart cookie!

Sorry George, I see it differently. I don't think I would buy in with those values of connection, as these are just for commercial purpose, and those acts are just for commodity – for profits. I have reservation in promoting such pop culture, especially if it is a blend of hippies, sex and materialism all fantasize in the songs.

Yes! I have been percolating about a blog post of my own about Lady Gaga and the lyrics in some of her songs (yes, I listen to Lady Gaga…always gets me through the cardio…) I love these two sentences: "When you reach out, empower, and believe in those that you connect with, imagine the power that you give them. Social media is making it easier (and even possible) to do that." I agree and have been using Facebook connections with former students to try to do that. Facebook has allowed me to remind those former students that I believe in them. As for her commercial purposes, obviously she is making way more than any of us educators are ever going to make, but I was excited to see this a few months ago: http://blog.glsen.org/2011/04/glsens-little-monst… I shared it with my 8th graders before our middle school Day of Silence. They thought it was pretty cool. Hopefully at least one walked away with the idea of 'hey, if I'm hugely successul one day, I'm going to give back too.'

I’m curious to find out what blog system you have been using? I’m experiencing some small security issues with my latest blog and I would like to find something more safeguarded. Do you have any solutions?
